Supporting Mental Health
Mental illness is very common. One in five (20%) Australians aged 16-85 experience a mental illness in any year. The most common mental illnesses are depression, anxiety and substance use disorder. 54% of people with mental illness do not access any treatment. This is worsened by delayed treatment due to serious problems in detection and accurate diagnosis. The proportion of people with mental illness accessing treatment is half that of people with physical disorders.
Mental health is very personal to me as someone who has battled with depression and anxiety in my teens and early adulthood. There needs to be more funding in mental health as it is one of the biggest societal problems we face today. So I am asking you, my friends, colleagues and random strangers to donate and in return I will dye my hair whatever colour you desire (the most donated will get to decide the colour) for the entire month of October as a tribute to all those people out there that we have lost to mental health and to all that are suffering today to this horrible disease.
