Will you back NeuRA again?

I’ll be frank. The number one issue facing medical research today is funding. Today I’m asking you, a former donor to back NeuRA again.

Our hope is that you can see the power of your generosity in the past and be inspired by the strength of NeuRA’s research to give again.

Since your last donation, NeuRA has made some incredible research breakthroughs… and with your gift today, together we can support this work that is set on improving, and even saving, peoples’ lives.

I’ll be frank. The number one issue facing medical research today is funding. Today I’m asking you, a former donor to NeuRA, to please donate again.
How does NeuRA’s research impact me?
Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, and the leading cause of death for Australian females. In 2018 there are roughly 425,415 people living with dementia, and without a medical breakthrough (like the research below), this number is expected to increase to 1,100,890 by 2056.

It is crucial to the overall wellbeing of our communities to find a cure for this debilitating disease.

What kind of research does NeuRA fund?

Each and every day our leading doctors and scientists work to discover, conquer and cure diseases and disabilities that impact the brain and nervous system in people from infants to old age. Below are just two of the reasons to back NeuRA again:

Global clinical trial for early onset Alzheimer’s brings us a step closer to understanding dementia.

Imagine knowing with almost 100% certainty that you will develop early onset Alzheimer’s… or in other words, you will lose your precious memories, your sense of self and your recognition of your loved ones.

There are people out there who have had to accept this as part of their life’s journey.

Progress is being made. Researchers you’ve previously supported are participating in a global study of people who live with this reality. They are trying to understand more about the disease’s progression and are trialling drug therapies to slow or even halt the symptoms associated with it.

Incredibly, the results of this study should be relevant for all types of dementia, helping us understand the symptoms of dementia much earlier. With further funding for research, to discover new and exciting therapies to stop or possibly reverse these symptoms.

“Being part of the trial and working toward a cure is not just for me – it’s for everybody.”

New hope for people with spinal injury

Being told you will never walk again is devastating and life changing. It impacts your livelihood, your independence, and the simplest of pleasures in life, like feeling the grass underneath your feet. A recent breakthrough is bringing new hope to people with spinal injury, taking them a step closer to their dream of walking again.

Thanks to your generosity, NeuRA’s Dr Sylvia Gustin and colleagues have found 50% of people with complete thoracic spinal cord injury still have surviving spinal nerve connections.

While nearly half of patients did not ‘feel’ a big toe experiment, significant signal response was found in the brain. This is incredible. It means the brain is still receiving messages… when previously thought that communication to the brain had been severed by the injury. Further research can bring about new treatments and rehabilitation options for people whose lives have been destroyed by spinal injury.

“The thought that one day I might be able to feel the sand between my toes again, or the waves wash over my feet gives me hope. It’s something Dr Gustin’s discovery has made possible,” says James Stanley, research participant.

The research our loyal donors support is truly transformational and life changing. It can give people their lives, their memories, their independence back. Right now, it’s bringing a lot of hope.

Our hope is that you can see the power of your generosity in the past and be inspired by the strength of NeuRA’s research to give again.

Did you know that your gift could help unlock some of medicines biggest questions? Imagine what we could possibly discover, conquer and cure in that time?
